Longines started life in Saint-Imier, Switzerland in 1832. Founded by Auguste Agassiz, the company made a name for itself making pocket watches that were hugely successful in the United States.

From the very beginning, the brand has been linked to horseracing, promoting its chronographs in equestrian circles by timing races. The company is highly respected in the aviation field as well, and in 1919 became the official supplier for the International Aeronautical Federation. Longines continues to be active in both areas today. The company is owned by The Swatch Group.
