The origins of Glashütte Original can be traced back to an ambitious decision by the German government to start a watchmaking industry in the former German silver mining town of Glashütte in Saxony. On December 7th, 1845 the first residents started their apprenticeship as watchmakers and by the beginning of the 20th century, Glashütte timepieces had gained worldwide recognition for their excellence.
Glashütte Original was one of the watch companies that was formed after the reunification of Germany and the privatization of VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, an East German conglomerate of watch companies in the German town. Glashütte Original is today owned by The Swatch Group.
Five interesting facts about Glashütte Original
In the late 1800s, unscrupulous watch companies from outside of Glashütte were putting the words “System Glashütte” on their watches to boost sales. This is why Glashütte Original added the word “Original” to its name.
After World War II, the Soviet army took away many of the city’s watchmaking tools and much of its machinery, but it didn’t stop the watchmakers as they figured out ways to make their own parts.
Since 2004, Glashütte Original has been a partner of the Dresden Music Festival, presenting the Glashütte Original Music Festival Award to young talented artists.
Glashütte Original has its own watchmaking school called the Alfred Helwig School of Watchmaking.
