Gabrielle Chanel opened her first boutique in Paris in 1913, selling hats and a limited line of garments. She quickly gained a loyal clientele with her practical designs, becoming exceedingly popular with women looking to break away from corsets and full skirts.
Over the following decades, her style and success would continue to grow, making her one of the biggest style icons of the last century. The brand introduced its first watch, the Premiere, in 1987, which was followed by the J12 in 2000, a bold timepiece that follows Chanel’s revolutionary style and started the brand’s journey into high-end watchmaking.
Five interesting facts about Chanel
The first Premiere watch was designed by Chanel’s artistic director Jacques Helleu and was shaped like a bird’s-eye view of Paris’s Place Vendôme.
The famous J12 is made out of high-tech ceramic and is entirely made in Chanel’s watch workshops in Switzerland’s La Chaux-de-Fonds.
The Boy Friend Collection features a metallic tweed bracelet that is borrowed from a man’s wardrobe and blurs the boundaries between masculine and feminine style.
The Chanel J12 X-Ray Calibre 3.1 features the world’s first sapphire crystal bracelet.
Famous people spotted wearing Chanel timepieces include Jennifer Aniston, Rihanna, Alessandra Ambrosio, Sharon Osbourne, William Chan, Angelina Jolie, and Hilary Clinton, among others.
